Two things happen in care work that look like helping and are not. The first is asking someone else because it is faster than asking the person. The second is offering a choice while making clear, in tone and timing, which answer is wanted.

Both are common, both are usually well meant, and both are the opposite of supported decision making. This module is about the difference.

How this module works Read the content straight through. It takes most people around an hour. Then complete the quiz at the end. You need 80% to pass, and your certificate appears on screen immediately. The quiz is open book, there is no time limit, and you can reattempt as many times as you need.

Currency statement and scope This module reflects the position as at August 2026. It covers the Commonwealth position in aged care under the Aged Care Act 2024, in force from 1 November 2025, and in disability under the NDIA Supported Decision Making Policy.

Guardianship, administration and enduring powers of attorney are state and territory law and vary. So do the compulsory treatment provisions in state and territory mental health legislation. This module does not teach those. Where a legal authority is involved, the terms of that specific appointment govern what the person can and cannot decide.

This is general information, not legal advice. Your provider's policies are the operational authority for how you record and escalate.
