Most support workers are kind, efficient, and doing things for people that those people could partly do themselves. Not through carelessness: through time pressure, habit, and a genuine wish to be helpful.
The cost is invisible and cumulative. A person who has their tea made for them three times a day for five years loses the ability to make tea, loses the reason to be in the kitchen, and loses the small daily evidence that they are a person who does things.
How this module works Read the content straight through. It takes most people around an hour. Then complete the quiz at the end. You need 80% to pass, and your certificate appears on screen immediately. The quiz is open book, there is no time limit, and you can reattempt as many times as you need.
Where this comes from Active support is an established practice framework developed in disability services, most closely associated with the work of Jim Mansell and Julie Beadle-Brown on person-centred active support. It is widely used in Australian supported accommodation and is increasingly applied in aged care.
It sits directly on the rights framework: the NDIS Practice Standards and Code of Conduct, the Statement of Rights under the Aged Care Act 2024, and Standard 1 The individual of the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. Your service's practice model and any individual plan remain the operational authority.
